Leadership Isn’t a Big Word — It’s a Daily Choice

Table of Contents

“Leadership isn’t some grand concept reserved for the elite.
It lives inside all of us—waiting to show up in the smallest moments.

Let me ask you something.

If you truly knew then what you know now…Would your life have looked different?

Your career.
Your relationships.
The way you showed up in the world.

Yeah. Me too.

Because when I first stepped into leadership, I didn’t see myself as a leader. Not even close. I thought leadership was a title. A role. Something you earned after years of proving yourself.

But when I look back now? I can see it clearly.

The moments I guided someone.
Encouraged someone.
Stood steady for someone.

All while quietly wondering… Am I even doing this right?

And interestingly, it was only when I became aware of leadership…that the doubt grew louder.

The Truth Nobody Tells You

There is no one “right” way to lead. And that’s precisely why so many people get stuck.

So here’s what I want you to hold onto—especially on the days you feel like a fraud:

You do you. Because there is only one you on this planet.

Your instincts matter.
Your style matters.
The way you connect with people matters more than any textbook ever will.

Say this out loud (yes, really):

“There’s only one me. I don’t know everything yet. But I will keep learning, growing, and showing up.”

So… What Is Leadership, Really?

I’ve asked thousands of leaders one simple question: “What does leadership mean to you?”

And the answers always come:

  • Guiding and influencing others
  • Helping people become their best selves
  • Creating vision
  • Thinking strategically
  • Moving people forward

But then I ask a better question: “Think of a leader who inspired you… What did they actually do?”

And that’s when everything shifts. Because no one talks about strategy.

They talk about how that leader made them feel.

  • Seen
  • Heard
  • Supported
  • Included

They talk about leaders who were honest. Present. Human.c And then, in one room, a woman said something that stopped everyone:

“My managers don’t know where they’re going… don’t talk to their team… and it feels like they don’t care.”

Silence. Because everyone recognised it.

The Uncomfortable Gap

Here’s the reality:

  • Only 1 in 10 people naturally have strong management talent
  • 82% of managers are seen by their teams as ineffective

That’s not a small gap.

That’s a disconnect between:

  • The leader we think we are
  • And the leader people actually experience

But here’s what matters most: This isn’t about bad people. It’s about untrained leadership. Because no one ever truly taught them how.

Why This Matters (More Than You Think)

This isn’t about performance metrics. This is about people.

Take Susie. Bright. Capable. Full of energy.

One day, she told her manager, “I feel trapped. Like a rat in a cage.”

To his credit, he tried. Gave her access to the gym after hours.

But the system didn’t change. Still 8–5. Still rigid. Still unseen.

And slowly… she dimmed.

Not because of cruelty. But because of unquestioned assumptions.

That’s how poor leadership shows up most of the time.

Not loud. Not aggressive.

But quiet. Outdated. Unaware.

The Leadership Shift

Leadership done well changes everything.

It changes:

  • How people feel on a Monday morning
  • Whether they speak up or stay silent
  • Whether they stay… or leave

At its best? Leadership doesn’t just improve performance.

It changes lives.

Your Reflection

Before you move on, sit with this:

  • Where are you already leading… without giving yourself credit?
  • Where might there be a gap between how you see yourself and how others experience you?
  • And most importantly… How do you want to show up tomorrow?

Because leadership isn’t a title.
It’s a way of being.
And it starts in the moments you think don’t matter.
