Nobody prepares you for the hard moments of leadership.

Hi!

This edition is a little different, and I want to be upfront about why: yesterday, after months of building quietly, I launched something — and this community is the first place I’m bringing it properly.

But true to form, I’m not going to just pitch you. Below you’ll find the story, the five practical tools behind it that you can use this week regardless, and one small favour at the end. Let’s get into it.

THE BIG STORY…

Nobody prepares you for the hard moments of leadership. Yesterday, I launched something that does.

In thirty years of coaching leaders — first-time managers all the way to CEOs — there’s one story I’ve heard more than any other. The details change, but it always goes something like this:

Maybe you know that moment. Maybe yours wasn’t a car park — maybe it was closing the office door, the drive home, or lying awake at 2 am replaying a conversation from three days ago.

Here’s what three decades of coaching have taught me: the leaders you admire have all been exactly there. The difference isn’t that they don’t struggle. The difference is they had support in the moments that actually mattered.

And here’s what’s always bothered me about my own industry: nearly all of that support is built for the top 10%. Executive coaching at hundreds of dollars an hour, booked weeks out. Programs and offsites that are genuinely good — until Monday morning arrives and the pressure hits.

Training doesn’t fail leaders. Timing does. The gap isn’t in the classroom — it’s in the moments between.

So I built Worksparks: real-time leadership coaching for the moment you need it. You open it, answer one question — What’s going on right now? — and talk it out for sixty seconds (or type). It helps you untangle the emotion from the issue, see it from angles you hadn’t considered, and walk back in with specific language and a clear next step.

It’s not advice. It’s clarity — built on the same coaching methodology I’ve used for thirty years. And it’s completely private: nothing tracked, scored, or reported. Because the only way to get real support is to feel safe being real.

It’s in early access now — free, no credit card required.

THE PRACTICAL BIT

Five things to do in the hard moments (with or without Worksparks)

These are the five moves behind Worksparks — and they work on paper, in your head, or out loud in your car. Steal them.

1. Untangle the emotion from the actual issue.

Two things are always happening: what’s strategic (the decision, the conversation) and what’s emotional (the frustration, the self-doubt). Tangled together, you can’t act well on either.

Try this: Two columns — “What’s actually happening” and “What I’m feeling about it.” Watch the issue shrink once the feeling has somewhere to go.

2. Say it out loud before you say it for real.

Conversations go badly when we’ve only rehearsed them in our heads, where we’re eloquent, and the other person cooperates.

Try this: Say your opening line out loud. If it sounds accusatory or apologetic to your own ears, it’ll land ten times worse in the room.

3. Name the conversation you’ve been avoiding.

Every leader has one. Avoided conversations don’t stay the same size — they grow, and so does the cost.

Try this: Ask “What conversation would my best self have already had?” Then book the meeting. Not the script. Just the meeting.

4. Make the decision, then give doubt a deadline.

Second-guessing for days isn’t diligence — it’s a tax on your energy and your team’s momentum.

Try this: Give yourself 24 hours to revisit with fresh eyes. After that, the decision stands unless genuinely new information arrives.

5. Find somewhere safe to be real.

You can’t show all your uncertainty to your team. Your boss isn’t the place for everything. Your partner has heard enough about work.

Try this: Ask yourself, “Where can I say the thing I can’t say anywhere else?” If the answer is nowhere, that’s the gap to close first. Leadership without a pressure valve isn’t strength. It’s a countdown.

THE FAVOUR

I’ve never asked this community for anything. Today I am.

Two things. Two minutes.

1. Try Worksparks with something real. Not a poke-around — bring it one genuine thing you’re facing this week. Then hit reply and tell me honestly what you thought, especially if something felt off. The first few hundred users are shaping what this becomes. I’d rather build it with you than for you.

2. Send it to one leader. Not your network — one person. The friend who just got promoted and is quietly drowning. The colleague in their first 90 days. The one who came to mind when you read “car park moment”.

Forward them this newsletter or send the link: worksparks.com. Tell them it’s free and it’s private.

And if you’re someone who backs early-stage companies or you see a partnership here — hit reply. Some conversations are best had early.

FOR PEOPLE & CULTURE / L&D LEADERS

If you’re wondering what Worksparks looks like across a whole leadership cohort — from first-time managers to executives, private by design, alongside your existing programs — I’m setting up a small number of pilot organisations right now. Just reply to this newsletter, and I’ll walk you through it personally.

With gratitude (and slightly terrified excitement),
