Now Is the Time for Courage (Because Playing It Safe Is Overrated)
The world is loud right now—AI reshaping jobs, markets going sideways, people debating everything from hybrid work to who owns the last Tim Tam in the staff kitchen. Leaders everywhere are waiting for the “right time” to act.
Spoiler alert: there is no perfect time.
Harvard Business Review says it best: Now is the time for courage. And I’m here to say it louder, sassier, and straight from the heart: The world doesn’t need more cautious leaders—it needs bold, brave, human ones.
My Courage Story (And What I Learned the Hard Way)
Years ago, my life imploded in the space of a week. My husband walked out, I was living overseas with my daughter, had barely enough money to keep us afloat, and job rejections were rolling in like spam emails. I wanted to hide under the doona and wait for things to magically fix themselves.
But here’s the thing—courage isn’t waiting for the fear to disappear. Courage is doing it while your knees are shaking.
So I dusted off my resume, swallowed my pride, and kept going. I didn’t feel brave. I didn’t feel ready. But every single “no” built my grit muscle until one “yes” changed everything. That “yes” eventually became my business, my books, and my mission to help others lead boldly—because if I could rise, so can you.
Five Courage Moves to Make Now
1. Own Your Narrative
HBR talks about creating a positive, purpose-driven narrative. For me, that meant turning “single mum abandoned in a foreign country” into “woman building a better life and helping others lead.”
Your Move:
- Ask: What’s my story? Am I playing the victim, or am I the hero here?
- Turn your purpose into your North Star.
2. Train for Bravery
Courage isn’t about leaping out of a plane on day one. It’s about building confidence through preparation and small brave acts—like speaking up in a meeting or setting one scary boundary.
Your Move:
- Practice micro-courage moments daily.
- Treat fear like the gym—it’s meant to make you stronger, not stop you.
3. Break Big Problems Into Small Wins
When life feels overwhelming, chunk it down. Back when I was rebuilding, I stopped trying to fix everything and focused on one thing a day—sending one job application, making one phone call, one step forward.
Your Move:
- Take big messy problems and carve them into “next right step” chunks.
4. Find Your Courage Crew
You don’t have to do it alone. I had friends who told me, “Keep going, Sonia. You’re braver than you know.” Those voices kept me upright when my inner critic wanted me curled in a ball eating ice cream for breakfast (true story).
Your Move:
- Build your squad of mentors, allies, and cheerleaders—and yes, people who’ll lovingly call you out.
5. Make Courage Sustainable
Courage without recovery is burnout waiting to happen. Courageous leaders know how to step back, breathe, and refill their tank. For me? Morning walks and gratitude journaling saved my mental health (and stopped me from stress-eating chocolate like it was a food group).
Your Move:
- Schedule non-negotiable self-care rituals. Bravery needs fuel.
The Bottom Line
Playing it safe feels comfortable—but it rarely creates impact. Courage doesn’t mean you won’t feel scared. It means you’ll act anyway, grounded in values, purpose, and vision.
So what’s your brave move? Speak up? Apply for that role? Launch that business? Set that boundary? Whatever it is, do it scared. Do it now.
