By Sonia McDonald – Leadership Coach, Author, and Manifestation Realist
“You’re a single mum now. You need to be realistic.” That’s what someone told me 20 years ago when I told them I was going to start my own business. I had just returned to Australia after being abandoned overseas by my ex-husband. I had a toddler on my hip, a few dollars in the bank, and over 40 job rejection emails in my inbox. And I was supposed to play it safe?
No. I chose something else.
I chose to bet on myself.
I chose to build LeadershipHQ from my kitchen table—before Zoom was a thing, before LinkedIn was cool, before people like me were “supposed” to lead. I manifested my dream business through purpose, persistence, and a whole lot of courage. I had no backup plan—just a fierce love for my daughter and a fire in my belly to lead differently.
Fast forward to now: I’m the CEO of multiple businesses. I’ve coached thousands of leaders, spoken on global stages, and published books. Not because I had it all figured out. But because I believed, I moved, and I didn’t give up.
And you can do the same.
You don’t need perfect timing, a fancy degree, or anyone else’s approval. You need these non-negotiables—the must-haves—to manifest your dream career or business. Let’s go.
✨ 1. Clarity Like a Laser Beam
Before you manifest anything, you need to get radically clear on what you want—and why you want it. Vague wishes lead to vague outcomes.
Ask yourself:
- What does my dream workday look like?
- What values must my workplace honour?
- Who am I when I’m doing work that lights me up?
💥 Your clarity creates the container. Without it, you’re throwing spaghetti at the universe and hoping something sticks.
✨ 2. Self-Worth That Can’t Be Shaken
Here’s the game-changer: you attract what you believe you’re worth. If your self-worth is shaky, you’ll keep settling for less—lower pay, toxic environments, or roles that drain you.
Work on this daily. Affirm it. Own it. Say it out loud:
“I am worthy of a career that reflects my brilliance, my values, and my purpose.”
Want to go deeper? Mirror work. Journaling. Coaching. Community. Do whatever it takes to reinforce your worth.
✨ 3. Aligned and Audacious Action
Manifestation without action? That’s called fantasy.
This is where many people stall. They wait for signs, stars, or some perfect moment. But real manifestors move.
✅ Update your LinkedIn and portfolio
✅ Say no to what’s not aligned
✅ Network with people in your dream space
✅ Pitch yourself for roles you think you’re not ready for
✅ Create what you wish existed
Remember: Every tiny step you take is a vote for the future you’re building.
✨ 4. A “Let Them” Mindset
If someone doesn’t support your dreams, LET THEM. If a recruiter ghosts you, LET THEM. If an old boss underestimates you, LET THEM.
Their actions don’t define you. Your response does.
Don’t waste your magic on people or places that don’t get it. Let them misunderstand you. Let them doubt you. You’re busy building.
✨ 5. Unshakable Vision Meets Unapologetic Boundaries
When you’re manifesting something big, you’ll be tested. That old toxic job might offer you a raise. That draining client might “need” you. That fear might whisper, “Who do you think you are?”
Set boundaries. Stay rooted.
Say it with me:
“If it’s not a hell yes for my soul, it’s a no.”
✨ 6. Your Energy Is Your Currency
Your vibe speaks before you do. Protect it. Elevate it.
High-vibration habits to boost your manifestation power:
- Gratitude journaling
- Daily affirmations (check out Affirm by Sonia for inspiration!)
- Movement and stillness (yes, both)
- Surrounding yourself with expanders—those who show you what’s possible
✨ 7. Trust and Detachment
This one is hard—but essential.
You have to believe it’s already yours, while being okay if it shows up differently than you imagined. That’s the sweet spot of manifesting:
Vision + Action + Trust = Alchemy
The “how” isn’t your job. Showing up as the future version of yourself is.
How I Helped an L&D Manager Find the Career of Her Dreams in Sydney
When Emily first reached out to me, she was in tears.
She had just been made redundant from a role she’d poured her heart into for five years. Her confidence was shattered. Her identity as a capable, purpose-driven Learning & Development leader felt like it had vanished overnight.
She said,
“I feel like I’ve lost everything. Who’s going to want me now?”
But I saw something different. I saw a leader who was exhausted—not broken. I saw someone with incredible depth, insight, and empathy—who just needed someone to remind her who the hell she was.
Together, we rebuilt from the inside out.
💡 We reframed her redundancy—not as rejection, but as redirection. 🧭 She clarified what her dream role actually looked like (and what she never wanted again). 🗣️ We reworked her story, her resume, and her mindset—focusing on impact, not titles. 💪 She started showing up differently. Stronger. Clearer. Unapologetically. 🎯 Within a few months, she landed a role leading L&D for a purpose-led, global organisation in Sydney—with flexible working, a team that valued her, and a salary that finally reflected her worth.
But here’s the real win: Emily told me she’d stopped settling. She stopped shrinking. She stopped doubting whether she was enough.
“I didn’t just find a new job,” she said. “I found myself again.”
This is why I do the work I do. Because when women remember who they are and claim the careers they deserve—everything changes.
