This past weekend, I found myself in a role I cherish more than any other: being a mum. My 23-year-old daughter, like so many young adults I work with, is navigating the often messy, complex world of self-worth. She’s brilliant, funny, kind, and talented—but, like so many others, she doesn’t see it. And it breaks my heart.
As we sat together, talking about her struggles, I realized something: this isn’t just her battle. It’s a battle I see over and over again in the young leaders I mentor, the clients I coach, and the incredible people I meet. Somewhere along the way, we’ve raised a generation that doesn’t fully grasp their own worth. And let me tell you—it’s time to change that.
The Struggle Is Real
We live in a world where comparison is at our fingertips 24/7. Social media screams, “You’re not enough!” in a thousand different ways, and society keeps raising the bar for what “success” should look like. For my daughter, like so many others, the weight of these expectations feels crushing.
She asked me, “Why can’t I just love myself? What’s wrong with me?” And my heart broke—not just because she felt this way, but because I’ve been there too. I know what it’s like to doubt yourself, to feel like you’re failing even when you’re doing your absolute best. And I know how hard it is to climb out of that hole.
The Mum/Coach Hat Came On
As a leadership coach, I spend my days helping others see their potential, and this weekend, I found myself using the same tools and lessons with my own daughter.
- We Talked About Her Inner Critic: I asked her to name that negative voice in her head and call it out for what it is: a liar. We even gave it a ridiculous name (because sometimes laughter is the best weapon against self-doubt).
- We Reframed Her Thinking: When she said, “I’m not good enough,” I asked, “According to who? What’s your evidence?” Spoiler alert: she couldn’t find any.
- We Focused on Small Wins: Instead of dwelling on what she hasn’t done, we celebrated the little victories—like the fact that she’s resilient, hardworking, and still showing up, even when it’s hard.
- We Practiced Kindness—To Herself: I reminded her that if she spoke to her friends the way she speaks to herself, they’d probably run for the hills. “So why,” I asked, “do you think it’s okay to treat yourself that way?”
The Bigger Picture: A Leadership Crisis in Self-Worth
This weekend wasn’t just about my daughter. It was about all the young adults I see struggling with the same thing. They don’t see their value because they’re measuring themselves against impossible standards. They’re waiting for someone else to validate their worth, instead of owning it for themselves.
But here’s the kicker: Leadership isn’t about being perfect. It’s about showing up—even when you’re scared, even when you’re unsure—and knowing that your worth isn’t up for debate.
What We Can All Learn
Whether you’re 23 or 53, self-worth is a battle worth fighting. It’s not something you’re born with or something someone else can hand you. It’s something you build—slowly, intentionally, and unapologetically.
Here’s what I told my daughter, and what I tell everyone I work with:
- Your Worth Isn’t Based on Your Achievements: You are valuable simply because you exist. Period.
- Comparison Will Kill Your Confidence: Someone else’s success doesn’t diminish yours. Stay in your lane.
- Celebrate Who You Are, Not Who You Think You Should Be: Perfection is a myth. Authenticity is power.
- Kindness Starts with Yourself: You can’t pour from an empty cup. Fill yours first.
A Leadership Reminder for All of Us
By the end of the weekend, I saw a small shift in my daughter. She didn’t wake up with magically sky-high self-esteem—but she did smile a little more. She hugged me a little tighter. And she agreed to start taking small, deliberate steps toward loving herself, one day at a time.
This is the same message I bring to the leaders I coach: Building self-worth isn’t about a quick fix or a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s about courage, compassion, and consistency. It’s about believing in your value, even when it feels impossible.
So, to My Daughter and Everyone Else Struggling With Self-Worth
You are enough—right now, exactly as you are. You don’t need to earn it. You don’t need to prove it. You just need to believe it. And when that feels hard (because it will), lean on someone who can remind you. Because we all need that reminder sometimes.
