Leadership is often described as empowering. Inspiring. A privilege.
And while all of that can be true, there is another side to leadership that many people quietly experience but rarely talk about. Leadership can be incredibly lonely. Not because leaders lack people around them. But they often lack a place to think out loud when the moment really matters. Ready for Worksparks – your digital coach!
The Moment Leadership Is Actually Tested
After more than 30 years working with leaders across organisations and industries, I have seen something again and again. Leadership rarely fails in strategy. It fails in moments.
The moment a leader avoids a difficult conversation. The moment pressure triggers a reactive decision. The moment when the wrong words damage the trust that took months to build.
Leadership is not usually tested during workshops. Or strategy sessions. Or leadership conferences.
Leadership is tested on Monday morning. In the meeting where tensions are high. In the conversation someone has been avoiding. In the moment a leader must decide whether to challenge something or stay silent. And in those moments, many leaders feel completely alone.
Leaders Are Expected to Know What to Do
One of the strange realities of leadership is this:
The more senior you become, the fewer places you have to think out loud.
Your team expects confidence.
Your peers are dealing with their own pressures.
And coaching sessions are often scheduled weeks away.
So leaders carry the pressure internally.
They think through decisions alone.
They second-guess conversations before they happen.
And sometimes they lie awake at night wondering if they are about to get something very important wrong.
The Gap No One Talks About
Organisations invest millions in leadership development.
Workshops.
Courses.
Coaching.
Frameworks.
And all of this matters. But most leadership challenges don’t occur during training.
They happen in real time. In the five minutes before a difficult conversation. In the moment when someone says something that crosses a line. In the decision that could affect someone’s career or the culture of a team. That gap between pressure and support is where many leadership mistakes happen.
Not because leaders are incapable. But because they are human. And leadership is human work.
What Leaders Actually Need
After coaching leaders for decades, one insight became very clear to me. Most leaders don’t need more leadership theory. They need someone in their corner in the moment.
Someone to help them pause. Think clearly. Separate emotion from strategy. Someone to help them respond with intention instead of reaction. Because the difference between a great leader and a struggling leader is often a moment of clarity.
Why I Created Worksparks
This insight is exactly why I created Worksparks. Worksparks is designed to support leaders during the messy, human moments of leadership. The difficult conversation. The performance concern. The decision that feels heavier than it should.
It is not designed to replace human coaching.
It is designed to complement it.
Think of it as the headspace leaders wish they had when pressure is highest.
A place to pause. Think. Reset.
And move forward with clarity. Because leadership is not tested in theory. It is tested in moments.
The Leaders Who Care the Most Feel This the Most
The leaders who struggle the most are rarely the ones who don’t care. They are often the ones who care deeply. They want to lead well. They want to support their people. They want to make the right decisions. And they feel the weight of those responsibilities every day. Leadership doesn’t need more pressure. It needs more support.
A Question for Leaders
Let me ask you something honestly. How often have you wished you had someone to sanity-check a leadership decision in the moment?
Not next month. Not after the situation has escalated.
But right when it is happening. If this resonates with you, I would genuinely love to hear your perspective. Leadership is complex.
And the more openly we talk about the real challenges of leadership, the better leaders we can all become.
What is the hardest leadership moment you have faced recently?
